PROPERTY DESCRIPTION
2315 sqm + 49 sqm garden | 2 story building | 12 rooms | 5 bathrooms | fireplace | storage area | grocery shop | cloister | balcony | terrace | church & chapel | garage
This building is composed by a three section rectangular church, and a two floor cloister from the sixteenth century.
In the entrance of the old cloister, there is a marble armillary sphere on the top of the door.
Through the door, one can access a vaulted compartment with ribs and floral keystone in the manueline style.
The cloister, like the church, has a ribbed vault supported by polygonal corbels.
On the main chapel of the church traces of geometric patterns paintings namely golden palm leaves are hardly visible. During the seventeenth century this church was considered as one of best decorated churches in town, enriched with fresco paintings.
It was D. João III, in the year 1531, who ordered the construction of the church, the infirmaries, and the expansion of the existing building.
The administration of the hospital was entrusted to the Order of the Canons Regular of St. John the Evangelist (Lóios) until 1567, when, by decision of Cardinal-Infante Henry, Archbishop of Évora, it was transferred to the Misericórdia of the town of Montemor-o-Novo.
MONTEMOR-O-NOVO CITY is A town where battles were fought for the nation’s freedom, where heroes were born and left their mark in history, Montemor-o-Novo has kept itself hugely humble until today.
In its day, the castle in Montemor-o-Novo was an impressive citadel perched on a hill.
Today, the journey to the past begins with the entrance from Port Vila, guarded by the lofty clock tower, and continues through the old streets where guests can admire the remains of a medieval village.
