Classified as Municipal Interest | 2.046m2 | 4-storey building | fresco painting on the ceiling | city center
The theater building has three floors, featuring a facade crowned by a triangular pediment and balcony windows with perfect arch lintels on the main floor. The ceiling of the auditorium is adorned with a fresco painting by artist Benvindo Ceia.
The architectural design was conceived by José de Sousa Larcher, who drew inspiration from the D. Maria II National Theater. The building spans over 2,000 square meters.
Cultural and recreational architecture, 19th century. The inauguration of the D. Maria II National Theater in Lisbon in 1846 introduced in Portugal a model for theater construction that would inspire other buildings, such as the Theater 1854.
It was the first building constructed specifically for theater in the city of Portalegre and is currently the sixth oldest known theater still standing in Portugal.
The theater building is located on a rectangular plot, forming the northwest corner of a large block situated behind the church (to the east), with its urban facades facing Largo do Visconde de Cidrais. The church obscures about two-thirds of the theater’s volume, but its visibility and urban impact, limited to two “small” facades—one facing the square and the other the Travessa do Teatro—are enhanced by the slightly oblique alignment of the plot relative to the church, the fact that the building is not fully attached to the church, its extension beyond the church’s side facade, and its position at the highest point of the square.
CARPENTER: José Maria dos Santos (responsible for the armchairs, 1886); PROJECT SUPERVISION: José de Sousa Larcher (1854); PAINTER: Álvaro Mateus Nunes Godinho (restoration of the set, 1886).
